Aromatherapy and Cognitive Performance

Scent is processed directly by the limbic system the part of the brain associated with emotion, memory, and motivation. This gives aromatherapy a relatively direct route to influencing mental state, which is why certain oils have been studied for their effects on alertness, working memory, and concentration.

The research is still developing, but several oils have demonstrated measurable effects in peer-reviewed studies. Here is what the evidence points to and how to put it into practice.

Essential Oils That Support Focus

  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis): Perhaps the most studied oil for cognitive function. A 2012 study by Dr Mark Moss at Northumbria University found that exposure to rosemary aroma was associated with improved speed and accuracy on cognitive tasks. The primary constituent 1,8-cineole is thought to inhibit the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter central to memory and learning.
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita): Stimulating and energising. Studies suggest peppermint aroma can increase alertness and reduce mental fatigue. Its sharp, clean scent is particularly effective at breaking through mental fog.
  • Lemon (Citrus limon): Bright and clarifying. Citrus oils have been associated with elevated mood and increased alertness, making lemon a useful addition to morning focus blends.
  • Basil (Ocimum basilicum): Less well known but highly effective. Basil oil is rich in linalool and methyl chavicol, which are thought to have a stimulating effect on the nervous system. Useful for sustained focus during long work sessions.
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus): Clarifying and refreshing. Like rosemary, eucalyptus contains 1,8-cineole and is a useful addition to focus blends, particularly when mental clarity is the goal.

How to Diffuse for Focus

  1. Begin with a essential oil burner, add water, then your home made blend, pop a tee light candle underneath and light.
  2. Burn 30–40 minutes during a focused work block, then take a break (both from the work and the diffuser).
  3. Cautiously keep an eye on the water level, blow the candle before the water evaporates.
  4. Rotate blends over time your nose adapts quickly, and variety helps maintain the alerting effect.

Important Notes

Avoid using highly stimulating oils such as rosemary and peppermint in the evening, as they may interfere with sleep. If you share your workspace with others, keep diffusion intensity low and ensure the space is well ventilated. Rosemary oil is not recommended for use around children under 6 or people with epilepsy.
